A Song And A Painting

TASK 1 – Work with a partner (write down your results!) and make sure you use headphones when listening to the song!

  1. Watch this song on YouTube. What is it about?
  2. Visit this website and find out about the message of the painting. Which emotion does the painting want to express?
  3. Many critics have compared the performance of the song to the painting. Say why you (don’t) share their opinion.

[Class discussion & handout of song lyrics, etc.]

TASK 2 – Again with a partner …

  1. Work on finding adjectives that describe emotions people might have who have been present at the events described in the song. Draw up a table using different categories:  positive – indifferent – negative – enthusiastic – neutral – disgusted – frightened – confused – aggressive

TASK 3 - … on your own!

Read the newspaper article at the bottom of the handout.

  1. Imagine you were one of the persons present at the events described. Choose one perspective and write a diary entry about what you have witnessed, describing your thoughts and emotions. You are:

- a member of the Klan,

- an Afro-American,

- someone from the South where the events described are rather common,

- someone from the North where the events described are uncommon.

HOMEWORK – Really ;-) !!!!!

Find out more about the topic of both the song and the newspaper article by finding info on the internet, etc.

Prepare a talk of about three minutes in length to present to the class on Tuesday! (You can include transparancies, but no PowerPoint, please!)
