TASK 1 – Work with a partner (write down your results!) and make sure you use headphones when listening to the song!
- Watch this song on YouTube. What is it about?
- Visit this website and find out about the message of the painting. Which emotion does the painting want to express?
- Many critics have compared the performance of the song to the painting. Say why you (don’t) share their opinion.
[Class discussion & handout of song lyrics, etc.]
TASK 2 – Again with a partner …
- Work on finding adjectives that describe emotions people might have who have been present at the events described in the song. Draw up a table using different categories: positive – indifferent – negative – enthusiastic – neutral – disgusted – frightened – confused – aggressive
TASK 3 - … on your own!
Read the newspaper article at the bottom of the handout.
- Imagine you were one of the persons present at the events described. Choose one perspective and write a diary entry about what you have witnessed, describing your thoughts and emotions. You are:
- a member of the Klan,
- an Afro-American,
- someone from the South where the events described are rather common,
- someone from the North where the events described are uncommon.
HOMEWORK – Really
